Tucked away in the far corner of gallery eleven, floor two of the Saatchi Gallery is James Robert Morrison’s ‘There is never more than a fag paper between them – Paul and Steven’.
Only 37 X 30 cm, the piece is small but makes a huge impact. It is made up of cigarette papers and depicts a pencilled sketch of a couple kissing. Morrison plays on the slur ‘fag’ –used to insult gay men– and reclaims it as his own. He also plays on the medium: the ‘fag’ (cigarette) paper.
Art enthusiasts should no longer feel they have to collect sizeable art pieces to get value for their money: small work can make a big impression.
